DURHAM, N.C. — Gonzaga women's tennis bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 4-1 victory over Nebraska on Sunday morning at the ITA Kickoff in Durham, N.C.
In the consolation match of the ITA Indoor Tennis qualifier, the Zags took the doubles point home and then were able to clinch the match with solid efforts from the bottom of the lineup.
"Today was a good win against a really feisty Nebraska team," head coach DJ Gurule said. "We didn't play our best, but I liked the way we competed throughout the match. We are happy to be heading back home with a win, and we have a really big challenge coming up next weekend."
GU was on top of its game in doubles play with
Kate Ketels and
Haruna Tsuruta getting things started with a 6-3 win on No. 3.
Sara Komer and
Domonique Garley then clinched the point on No. 2 with a hard-fought 7-5 win.
In singles, fifth-ranked
Sophie Whittle dominated 6-2, 6-0 to give GU a 2-0 lead. Komer then followed on No. 6 with a 7-5, 6-2 win to make it 3-0.
After Nebraska earned a win on No. 2, the Zags' freshman
Vlada Medvedcova grabbed control of her match in the second set to win 7-6(1), 6-2 and clinch the match.
Garley was leading in the third set on No. 3, and Tsuruta was down 2-1 in the third set of her match when the dual was finished.
GU hits the road to Santa Barbara, Calif., next weekend to face Alabama on a neutral court on Feb. 2, before a doubleheader with UCSB and Cal Poly on Feb. 3.
