GU Athletics to Dedicate Johnson Family Boathouse

New boathouse for rowing programs at Silver Lake

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga Athletics is set to dedicate the new Johnson Family Boathouse at Silver Lake on Saturday at 9 a.m. The boathouse, built as the new home for Gonzaga men's and women's rowing, is located just 15 minutes from Spokane on Silver Lake.

With construction complete earlier this fall, the ceremony will take place on site and include both the men's and women's rowing programs, numerous program supporters and athletic department staff.

"Our family is honored to help bring this project to reality," Zach Johnson said. "We are very passionate about collegiate varsity rowing on the West Coast and have always had so much respect for the Gonzaga program and their continued success. We hope this boathouse helps continue such a winning tradition for years to come."

The Johnson Family has been involved in the sport of rowing for years and made the lead gift on the boathouse project. Both Zach and his wife, Hannah, rowed competitively in college with Zach going on to row at the elite level, medaling in nine national championships in six different boat classes. Rowing has always been a big part of the Johnson Family as Zach served as an assistant coach at Yale and head coach at San Diego State, and most recently, UC San Diego.

"We are looking forward to dedicating this great new facility, and we can't say enough about the support from the Johnson Family which was a major factor in making it a reality," Director of Athletics Mike Roth said. "With them and others who supported this project, our rowing teams now have an amazing setup and place to call 'home'."

Both Gonzaga rowing programs have begun training out of the facility and are set to compete in the Head of the Spokane on Oct. 19 on the Spokane River.
