SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga cross country programs head out to a trio of meets in three different states Friday and Saturday. This is the final week tuneup before the West Coast Conference Championships on Nov. 1, in Van Nuys, Calif.
The Zag men open the weekend at the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wis. In just ten years, the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational has established itself as one of the nation's premier collegiate meets.
The 8-kilometer men's race will be held on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, which opened in 2009 and is located adjacent to University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
The 36-team men's "A" race features 19 programs ranked in the latest USTFCCCA national poll. Six Top-10 teams will be running in the race, including No. 1 Northern Arizona.
The race begins at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. Live video via FloTrack, and live results, will be available on GoZags.com.
Friday afternoon, the Bulldog men and women will have a select number of runners at the Sasquatch Invitational. The annual event returns to Downriver Golf Course in Spokane. Last year, the GU women and men swept the team titles.
A collection of runners from SFCC and Lewis-Clark State will join the Zags. Friday's course will be setup over the front nine holes at Downriver, with the start and finish on Hole 1. Both races will use 2,000-meter loops, but the women's race will include a 1k loop to start, then two 2k loops to follow. It is a mostly flat course with some gradual uphill on each loop and some generous downhill as well.
The women's 5K race begins at 4:15 p.m., with the men's 8K following at 4:50. Results will be posted on GoZags.com, after both races.
The Gonzaga women are one of 32 teams in the 2019 Arturo Barrios Invitational field in College Station, Texas, Saturday morning. The Zags are one of 17 programs in the women's 6K race that are regionally-ranked. GU (No.11) and Cal Baptist (No. 6) are the lone west regionally-ranked teams in the event.
The event, only in its second year, will be run on the Dale Watts Cross Country Course. Five regions – Mid-Atlantic, Mountain, South Central, South, and West – will be represented among the field named after Aggie legend Arturo Barrios, a member of the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame.
The 6K women's race begins at 7:45 a.m. Pacific Time Saturday. Live results will be available on GoZags.com.
