Gonzaga returns to national rankings
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's cross country team returned to the national rankings at No. 29 in the latest USTFCCCA poll Tuesday.
"Obviously just a poll, but nice to get some respect," Director of GU Cross Country Pat Tyson said. "I know our student-athletes have high goals. Hopefully they can feed off of this ranking and continue to chase our ultimate goal of qualifying for nationals, and see how far we can climb the ladder in Terre Haute, Ind.
"It's weird to think we are ranked seventh in our region and 29th in the country. It just shows how competitive the NCAA West Region is. We still have our work cut out with WCC Championships next week and then a trip 80 miles down the road to Colfax for NCAA West Regional three weeks from Friday."
The Zags received 49 points in Tuesday's poll, following a 16th place finish at the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wis., last Friday. The Zags entered the race unranked, and the field included 19 ranked programs. GU finished ahead of 10 teams that appeared in last week's rankings.
James Mwaura crossed the line at 23:56.5 in 15th. The sophomore rose 24 spots over the last 4,000 meters, and 38 spots over the last 6K. Peter Hogan placed 61st with a time of 24:22.9.
In Spokane, the Bulldogs defended their team title at the Sasquatch Invitational. The GU men had eight finishers in the Top-15, including three in the Top-10. Ciaran O'Leary was fourth at 24:48.9.
Gonzaga has a week off before the West Coast Conference Championships in Van Nuys, Calif., on Nov. 1. The races will be run at the Woodley Lakes Golf Course, beginning with the women's 6K at 10 a.m., and the men's 8K at 11. Live video and results will be available on GoZags.com.
