SPOKANE, Wash. – Samantha Heilman scored three goals as the Gonzaga women's soccer team opened West Coast Conference play with 6-0 victory over San Diego at Luger Field Saturday.
Heilman was the first Zag to record a hat trick since 2003. Annie Hawkins was the last GU player to achieve the feat in a 3-1 win over Portland State on Aug. 29, 2003.
Heilman scored the first half's lone goal in the 21
st minute. Her first goal of the season was off an assist from
India Jencks. The Bulldogs (8-3-0, 1-0-0 West Coast Conference) outshot USD, 12-4, in the first half.
Five minutes into the second half, Heilman and Jencks connected again for the second goal. Two minutes later,
Madeline Gotta found the back of the net for the third time this season, off of an assist by
Jordan Thompson.
Sophia Viviano added an unassisted goal in the 59
th minute.
Jencks found Heilman for another goal in the 67
th minute. It was Jencks' sixth assist of the season, and 11
th of her career. She now has 47 points in her career.
Darcy Woodward scored her first collegiate goal in the 87
th minute.
Erin Healy was credited with the assist.
The Zags finished with a 23-8 advantage in shots, placing 14 on goal. San Diego (4-5-1, 0-1-0 WCC) had four shots on frame. GU took five corner kicks, while the Toreros had three.
Amber Michel made eight saves in the USD net, and
Isabel Jones had three saves for the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga visits Portland Wednesday. The Pilots (4-3-1, 0-1-0) fell at Pepperdine Saturday, 2-1. Wednesday's start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live video and stats will be on GoZags.com.
