Four GU men and Manley earn All-WCC honors
VAN NUYS, Calif. – Following their efforts at the 2019 West Coast Conference Championships, five Gonzaga runners earned All-Conference recognitions Friday.
Claire Manley was tabbed First Team All-WCC on the women's side, and James Mwaura was on the men's first team for the second straight season. He's the first Zag to earn the honor in back-to-back to seasons since Chris Boyle in 2009 and 2010.
Peter Hogan received Second Team All-Conference honors for the second straight year. Cullen McEachern was also selected Second Team All-WCC. Riley Moore was named the 2019 West Coast Conference Men's Freshman of the Year. It's the second straight year a Bulldog men's runner received the honor, after Mwaura earned the recognition last season.
Mwaura had the best finish as a Zag in the men's 8K race since 2010. The sophomore crossed the line at 23:40.17. Boyle was the last GU runner to place in the top-five, finishing fourth in 2010.
Manley ran the fifth-fastest 6K time in program history at 20:33.22, crossing the line in sixth-place. The redshirt junior is the first Zag in three years to finish in the Top-10 at the WCC Championships.
"Claire's run was just outstanding," GU Women's Head Coach Jake Stewart said. "And, it was all Claire. She made her mind up about how she wanted that race to play out earlier in the week and executed. She's put the work in and deserves today's outcome."
Hogan placed 11th with a time of 24:07.43, while McEachern was close behind in 15th at 24:20.85. Moore finished in 22nd, crossing the line at 24:41.79.
"It was a very good conference day for Gonzaga," Director of Gonzaga Cross Country Pat Tyson said. "Our team score was a mere 12 points behind No. 12 Portland, and our team score of 63 the lowest since BYU joined the WCC! I'm just so proud of the way we packed up and got after it! We are excited for NCAA West Regionals in two weeks, and we got to stay healthy and use this momentum to hopefully get a birth to nationals in three weeks."
The GU women and men have a week off before the NCAA West Regionals in Colfax, Wash. The races will be run at the Colfax Golf Club, beginning with the women's 6K at 11:30 a.m., and the men's 10K at 12:30 p.m. Live results will be available on GoZags.com.
