Bulldogs host Skyhawks for second time in history

THE TIP-OFF
- Gonzaga will look to remain unbeated inside the McCarthey Athletic Center Thursday night against UT Martin. A win Thursday against the Skyhawks would mark the 200th victory inside McCarthey for the Bulldogs.
- Gonzaga is receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, and the Bulldogs are ranked No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
- The Bulldogs have started the season 2-0 12 times in program history, including three times during Lisa Fortier's first five seasons. A win Thursday would mark the fourth time in the last six seasons the Zags have started 2-0.
- This will be the fourth time in program history the Zags have played on Nov. 14. GU carries an overall record of 2-1 on this date.
- Through the first week of the 2019-20 season, Gonzaga ranks in the top six in the country for attendance percent capacity. The Bulldogs had 5,349 fans at their season-opener to fill 89.15 percent of the McCarthey Athletic Center. That percentage ranks sixth in the country.
- Gonzaga returns two starters and seven letter-winners from last season's squad that claimed the Zags' third consecutive and 15th overall West Coast Conference regular season title.
- In 2018-19, the Bulldogs advanced to their third-straight NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Second Round.
SERIES REVIEW
- This is the second meeting between Gonzaga and UT Martin. The Bulldogs won the first matchup between the two teams, a 91-54 victory on Nov. 9, 2013 inside the McCarthey Athletic Center.
- Gonzaga carries an even 1-1 record against current Ohio Valley Conference opponents. The Bulldogs carry a 1-0 mark against UT Martin, but they fell to Belmont 71-63 back in 2017 during the Play4Kay Showcase.
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
- The Skyhawks return 12 players from last season's team that finished 23-9 with a 13-5 OVC record, good for second in the conference. The squad advanced to the program's seventh OVC Basketball Championship title game in the last nine years, falling to eventual champion and No. 1-seeded Belmont, 59-53.
- Chelsey Perry and Maddie Waldrop were both named OVC Preseason All-Conference. Perry is a two-time All-OVC honoree and averaged 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game last season. Waldrop averaged 8.0 points and 7.3 rebounds a season ago.
- Through two games this season, the Skyhawks are 0-2 with losses at Saint Louse (56-50) and at No. 10/8 Mississippi State (82-46).
- UT Martin averages 48.0 points per game shooting 30.3 percent from the floor and 17.1 percent from long range.
- The Skyhawks average 31.5 rebounds per game, 7.0 assists per game and 17.5 turnovers per game.
- Tamiah Stanford leads the offensive attack with 13.5 points per contest shooting 40.9 percent from the floor. Damiah Griffen ranks second with 12.5 points per game.
- Perry leads the charge on the glass as she averages a team-best 7.0 rebounds per game. Griffin is a close second with 6.5 boards per contest.
- The last and only time Gonzaga faced UT Martin, the Bulldogs won 91-54 back on Nov. 9, 2013. Four Zags finished in double-figures, led by Haiden Palmer's 18 points. The Zags limited the Skyhawks to 26.7 percent shooting for the game, and they out-rebounded UT Martin 52-39.
KAYLEIGH TRUONG SHINES IN OPENER
Freshman guard Kayleigh Truong had a stellar season-opening game for the Bulldogs. The Houston, Texas native finished with 18 points off 6-of-9 from the floor including 4-of-6 from long range. She added four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 23 minutes of play. Truong's 18 points ranks second among first-time performances by a Gonzaga freshman (dating back to 1999), but her performance ranks first among TRUE freshmen. Janelle Bekkering is the only other Zag to score more, netting 20 points in her debut back in 2007. However, Bekkering was not technically a TRUE freshman but instead a redshirt freshman, as the Taber, Alberta (Canada) native redshirted her freshman season in 2006-07.
