Sophomore will be second-ever GU men’s runner to run at nationals
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga's James Mwaura was named an individual qualifier for the NCAA Championships next Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.
The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee announced the team and individual qualifiers for the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships Saturday.
In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals qualified at their respective NCAA regional competitions. Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large.
Thirty-eight individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their regions.
Mwaura had the best-ever finish by a Zag at the NCAA West Regionals, crossing the line in third with a time of 29:53.2. Mwaura is only the second GU men's runner to ever qualify for nationals. Matthew Crichlow was the first in 2015, after placing 18th at regionals. Crichlow was the first Gonzaga men's runner to be named All-Region, last season Mwaura was the second after becoming the first Zag to run a sub-30-minute 10K, breaking the program record at 29:48.9.
The Gonzaga men nearly qualified as a team for the first time in program history. The Bulldogs had their best-ever finish at the NCAA West Regional Championships, placing sixth in Colfax, Wash. They came into the race ranked seventh in the region and two spots out of the USTFCCCA Top 30 national poll.
"Although we are licking our wounds for not making it as a team, we are excited for James," Director of GU Cross Country and Track and Field Pat Tyson said. "He's the second individual men's team athlete to qualify! James has big dreams and he will chase those dreams in a Gonzaga Jersey this coming Saturday."
Indiana State University will host the championships Nov. 23, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course located in Terre Haute, Ind. The men's race is scheduled to start at 9:15 a.m. Pacific Time.
NCAA cross country fans not in attendance can watch live and on-demand content and coverage of the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on FloTrack.org. Live coverage of the NCAA Championships will be available starting at 8 a.m. Pacific time until the conclusion of the awards ceremony.
