Zag duo earn third and fourth All-Region honors in program history
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga's Peter Hogan and James Mwaura were recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Monday.
All-Region honors for the 2019 NCAA Division I Cross Country season were recognized by the USTFCCCA following Regional Championships Friday.
A total of 225 men and 225 women from 139 different institutions earned the distinction by finishing among the top-25 runners at one of nine regional sites across the country.
Mwaura had the best-ever finish by a Zag at regionals, crossing the line in third, with a time of 29:53.2. The sophomore punched his ticket to the NCAA National Championships Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.
Mwaura is only the second GU men's runner to ever qualify for nationals. Matthew Crichlow was the first in 2015, after placing 18th at regionals. Crichlow was the first Gonzaga men's runner to be named All-Region, last season Mwaura was the second after becoming the first Zag to run a sub-30-minute 10K.
Hogan became the third All-Region finisher in program history Friday. He crossed the line in 15th with a time of 30:02.6. His time is the second-fastest 10K all-time at GU, and the third-best finish ever by a Bulldog at regionals.
Indiana State University will host the championships Saturday, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course located in Terre Haute, Ind. The men's race is scheduled to start at 9:15 a.m. Pacific Time.
NCAA cross country fans not in attendance can watch live and on-demand content and coverage of the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on FloTrack.org. Live coverage of the NCAA Championships will be available starting at 8 a.m. Pacific time until the conclusion of the awards ceremony.
