STOCKTON, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's soccer team matched a program record for most wins in a season with a thrilling 3-2 victory at Pacific Saturday. In the regular season finale, the Zags won their 12
th game of 2019.
The Bulldogs (12-6-1, 5-3-1 West Coast Conference) finished fourth in the conference for the second straight season. This year's GU team won 12 games, the most in 11 years. The 2005 and 2008 Zags reached 12 wins in their seasons. Gonzaga won five league games for the second consecutive season. Prior to the past two seasons, the Bulldogs had never won more than four conference contests.
Gonzaga controlled possession and outshot the Tigers Saturday, 24-9. The Zags placed 14 shots on goal, while Pacific had nine. GU had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks as well.
The Bulldogs'
Madeline Gotta scored a goal and recorded an assist in the win. The senior moved to eighth in program history with 37 points in her career. Her 13 goals rank 10
th all-time at GU, and her 11 assists are sixth.
After Pacific opened the scoring in the 56
th minute off of a goal from Sigrid Aas, Gotta converted on a penalty kick in the 61
st minute. She was 5-for-5 this season on penalty kicks. It was the San Diego native's seventh goal of the season, which ranks ninth in program history.
Just over three minutes later,
Erin Healy scored her fifth goal in her freshman season. Gotta was credited with her fourth assist of the season. In the 82
nd minute,
Taylor Kernion put the Zags ahead 3-1 with her second goal of the season.
Sigrid found the back of the Gonzaga net for a second time in the 83
rd minute. Katelyn Chandler was credited with her second assist of the game on the Pacific (3-16-0, 0-9-0 WCC) goal.
The Tigers' Weronika Baranowska had 11 saves, and
Lyza Bosselmann made four saves for the Bulldogs.
