Bulldogs look for third-straight season sweep over Toreros

THE TIP-OFF
- Gonzaga and San Diego meet for the 69th time in program history and the 32nd time in Spokane. Currently, the Zags are on a six-game winning streak after defeating the Toreros 86-61 earlier this season in San Diego.
- The Bulldogs are currently on a six-game win streak, and they have won the last six games by an average of 21.0 points while limiting opponents to an average of 56.3 points per contest. The Zags also claim the longest win streak of the season in the WCC, boasting a 12-game win streak from Nov. 23 through Jan. 12. BYU claims the next longest win streak of 11 games; losses at Loyola Marymount and at Pepperdine on Jan. 31 and Feb. 2 ended the Cougars' win streak and dropped them out of the AP Top 25.
- Prior to Gonzaga's 70-68 loss at BYU on Jan. 17, the Zags has posted a program-best 16-1 start. However, the current 22-2 mark is only the second of program history. The Bulldogs were also 22-2 during the 2004-05 season. That season, the Zags posted a program-best 23-game win streak and finished the season 28-4 overall with an unblemished 14-0 mark in WCC play. Gonzaga advanced to the second round of the WNIT, losing at Missouri State 85-66 to end the season.
- The Bulldogs currently lead the WCC in seven categories: Scoring defense (57.7 ppg, 36th nationally), scoring margin (+16.8, 20th nationally), field goal percentage defense (37.5%), 3-point field goal percentage defense (28.0%, 36th nationally), rebounding defense (30.7 rpg), turnover margin (+4.1) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2). The Zags also rank second in eight categories: scoring offense (74.5 ppg), free throw percentage (75.8%), field goal percentage (45.6%), rebounding margin (+7.2), assists per game (15.6), steals per game (9.8), defensive rebounding percentage (.719) and offensive rebounding percentage (.381).
- Gonzaga is ranked for the 11th-straight week after entering the polls at No. 24/22 on Dec. 3. Following wins at Pacific (Jan. 31, 63-51) and at Saint Mary's (Feb. 2, 66-52), Gonzaga moved up to No. 13 in the AP Poll and No. 12 in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll. The Zags' No. 12 ranking is the highest in either poll in program history.
- Gonzaga eclipsed the 20-win plateau with its 63-51 victory at Pacific on Jan. 31. It marks the 14th time in program history that the Bulldogs have won at least 20 games; the Zags have eclipsed the 30-win game only once. During the 2010-11 season when the Bulldogs advanced to the Elite Eight, Gonzaga finished with a program-record 31 wins with a 31-5 overall record.

- Saturday will mark the seventh time the two programs have met while Gonzaga has been nationally ranked. The Bulldogs are an undefeated 6-0 against the Toreros as a nationally ranked program; the Zags have defeated San Diego by an average of 16.7 points while they have been ranked.
- Gonzaga has won 33 of the last 37 games against San Diego, dating back to 2003. The Toreros picked up a four-point win in the WCC Tournament in 2008 (when the tournament was hosted by San Diego). USD also won three-straight from 2015-16; its last win over the Bulldogs was a 58-57 win in Spokane on Feb. 25, 2016.
- In the last meeting, Gonzaga shot a then season-best 55.6 percent from the floor and 50 percent from long range to run past San Diego. (Since that matchup, the Zags set new season-highs, first against USF on Jan. 24 shooting 59.3 percent from the floor, followed up by a season-best 60.3 percent at Portland on Feb. 9). Three Zags finished in double-figures led by Zykera Rice with 18 points while Katie Campbell was deadly from long range, sinking 5-of-7 attempts to for 17 points. Jenn Wirth added a double-double of 13 points and 10 boards while Laura Stockton dished out a career-high 10 assists. The Bulldogs led 41-29 at half and cruised to the 86-61 victory.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO:
- The Toreros are currently on an 11-game losing streak, the biggest losing streak currently in the WCC. USD's lone conference win on the season came with a 57-49 win at Santa Clara on Dec. 31, 2018.
- San Diego has been battling injuries all season long, and nine of their 14 roster players have seen action in at least 14 games. Currently, the Toreros are down to eight active players with five players averaging nearly 30 minutes per game.
- In conference play, the Toreros have struggled offensively, shooting just 37.8 percent from the floor, including 22.2 percent from beyond-the-arc, while averaging 56.1 points per game.
- Currently, USD averages 61.5 points per game shooting 40.1 percent from the floor and 27.5 percent from long range. The Toreros average 37.4 rebounds per game while limiting opponents to 34.3 rebounds for a rebounding margin of +3.1, good for fourth in the WCC.
- Two players average double-figures for San Diego, led by Patricia Brossmann with 11.1 points per game while Madison Pollock adds an even 11.0 points per contest. Brossmann and Pollock also lead the rebounding effort with 7.4 and 5.9 rebounds per game, respectively.
- San Diego is coming off a tough 80-49 loss to Saint Mary's at home, marking USD's second 30+ point loss in conference play. The Toreros also lost by more than 30 points (32 points) to Pacific on Jan. 12 (79-47).
SHARING THE ROCK
The Zags continue to improve their ability to share the basketball. On Feb. 9 at Portland, the Bulldogs delivered a season-high 27 assists on 35 made field goals. It marked the six time this season (all in conference play) that the Zags have dished out at least 20 assists. Gonzaga has also been able to take care of the ball better than any other WCC team as it averages a league-leading 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio.
MULTIPLICITY
The Bulldogs' bench is the deepest in the conference as the Zags play eight players at least 20 minutes while no one averages more than 28 minutes per game (Chandler Smith leads the team in minutes played at 28.3). Six players average at least 8.5 points per game, led by Zykera Rice at 13.8 points per contest, while seven players are shooting over 40 percent from the floor and three players shoot at least 50 percent. Through 24 games, the Zags have had seven different top scorers and seven different top rebounders. In Gonzaga's last game at Portland on Feb. 9, five different players reached double-figure points; that marked the fifth time this season that five or more Zags have scored in double-figures in the same game and the 11th time that at least four Bulldogs reached double-figures.
MOVING ON UP
Laura Stockton dished out two assists in GU's 93-62 at Portland on Feb. 9. Stockton now has 433 career assists to rank fourth all-time in GU history. She is seven assists short of third place; former Zag Amy Simpson claims the third spot with 439 career assists. Currently, Stockton leads the team and ranks fourth in the conference with 4.4 assists per game. If she continues at that rate, it will take her two games to surpass Simpson for third place all-time.
SHOTS FIRED, AND MADE
Currently, Jill Townsend and Zykera Rice are shooting over 50 percent from the floor for the season. Townsend leads the Zags and ranks third in the WCC shooting 53.8 percent from the floor, while Rice ranks fifth shooting 51.2 percent. (Sophomore Jenn Wirth is currently shooting 59.6 percent from the floor, but she does not qualify for the overall season field goal percentage as she has not played in at least 75 percent fo the season's games).
