GU lost just one singles set in six matches
SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga women's tennis swept its way to a 7-0 victory against Eastern Washington on Friday night at the Stevens Center.
The Zags (3-1) lost only one set in singles play on the way to winning all six matches after clinching the doubles point over the Eagles (3-3).
"I like the way the ladies came out and knocked the rust off after two weeks without a match," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "We are looking forward to taking on Wyoming tomorrow. It should be great match."
Gonzaga cruised to the doubles point on Nos. 1 and 3. On No. 1, the combo of Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas won five of the first six games on the way to a 6-2 win, while Haruna Tsuruta and Kate Ketels were solid in a 6-3 win on No. 3.
From there, Gonzaga dominated, clinching the team win with three quick singles matches. Ketels was the first to finish on No. 6 with a nearly perfect 6-1, 6-0 win.
The nation's No. 1-ranked player Sophie Whittle was the next to finish on Court 1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, while Graciela Rosas added the clinching point on No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
GU's No. 111-ranked Garley won 6-2, 7-5 on No. 3 to make it 5-0, and Vlada Medvedcova won 6-2, 6-3 to make it 6-0. On No. 5, Tsuruta added to the sweep with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8) victory in three sets.
Gonzaga will be back at the Stevens Center on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Wyoming in a non-conference match. Live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
