Zags Fall Short at No. 25 Washington

Haruna Tsuruta earned a singles win at No. 4

SEATTLE — Gonzaga's women's tennis team battled, but fell short in a 6-1 loss at No. 25 Washington on Tuesday evening in Seattle, Wash.

"I thought we were really competitive for most of the match," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "Washington is a well-coached and very talented team. We will make some adjustments this week and look forward to playing back at home on Sunday."

Gonzaga (4-2) put up a valiant effort in the doubles point, but the Huskies (7-1) controlled play down the stretch. On No. 1, Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas dominated in a 6-2 victory, but Washington won 6-4 on No. 2 and 6-3 on No. 3 to take the point.

In singles, the momentum swung back and forth with Washington taking the first set on four of the six courts, but GU forced a third set on two of those to put them tied or in the lead on four courts. The Huskies battled back, however, to take the third set on Nos. 2 and 3 to clinch the victory.

GU added a win on No. 4 with Haruna Tsuruta taking a 7-5, 6-3 victory in straight sets. On No. 1, the nation's top-ranked player Sophie Whittle battled No. 97-ranked Stacey Fung, but fell in a tiebreaker 6-4, 6-7(6), 0-1(9).

GU returns home to the Stevens Center to face Washington State on Sunday at 2 p.m. Check GoZags.com for links to live coverage.
