No. 39 Women’s Tennis Drops Match at No. 40 Wichita State

Medvedcova grabbed the lone singles win for GU

WICHITA, Kan. — The No. 39 Gonzaga women's tennis team fell to No. 40 Wichita State 6-1 on Monday in Wichita, Kan.

Against the third of three straight matches against Top-40 opponents, the Zags (6-5) came just a tiebreak short of winning the doubles point and battled the Shockers (8-6) to the third set on three of the six singles courts.

"It was a very difficult schedule, and we just didn't play well enough against some really good teams the last few days," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "We'll regroup and look forward to our match at Santa Barbara."

In doubles, GU's 25th-ranked pair of Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas kept their undefeated season in tact with a tiebreak win 7-6(6) over the No. 46 duo of Fatima Bizhukova and Marta Bellucco on Court 1. After the Shockers took Court 3, 6-2, it came down to a tiebreak between GU's Sara Komer/Domonique Garley and Wichita State's Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva/Esther Thebault on Court 2. The Shocker pair forced a tiebreak and won 8-6 in the break to clinch the point.

In singles, the Shockers won the first three matches to finish, taking wins on Courts 1, 2 and 3 to clinch the team victory. On No. 3, Garley again was on the short end of a tiebreaker, dropping the third set 7-6(6).

GU earned a three-set win on No. 4 from Vlada Medvedcova, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, on No. 5 for its lone singles win.

Gonzaga is back on the road at UCSB on Thursday for the fourth match of a stretch of six in a row away from home.
