Bulldogs Complete Day 1 of UCSD Invitational

Zags return to the water Sunday
CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team completed the first day of the UCSD Invitational Saturday evening at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The Bulldogs faced Stanford, Drexel, UCSD and USD, besting WCC foe USD in each head-to-head matchup of the day.
"The morning session was good racing for all the boats," head men's rowing coach Dan Gehn said. "The JV race was the most hotly contested, and it ended in a dead heat with Stanford. We came from a half-length down in the last 250 meters and drew even at the line."
GU's second varsity eight finished the dead heat with a time of 6:08.9, even with Stanford in the Zags' second race of the day. In the first race of the day, the Bulldogs finished second with a time of 6:09.14, nine seconds behind Stanford's winning time of 6:00.99. USD came in third with a time of 6:20.90.
In the afternoon session, GU's varsity eight opened with a second-place finish with a time of 5:54.88 behind Drexel's winning time of 5:46.97. USD came in third with a time of 6:01.96. GU's second varsity finished in second (6:02.47) while the Bulldogs third varsity eight came in third with a time of 6:17.81.
"The afternoon session was rougher conditions and a strong quartering tail wind, something we haven't had a chance to row in," Gehn said. "It was a good effort, but we fell short."
The Bulldogs continue with the second day of the UCSD Invitational Sunday, March 31.
