Zags set to face multiple ranked opponents this weekend
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team returns to California this week for the Lake Natoma Invitational, hosted by Sacramento State and California April 13th and 14th in Gold River, Calif. The regatta features four ranked teams in No. 2 Cal, No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 Brown and No. 12 USC.
"I'm excited for the Natoma Invite because it's a really great course and we have had a lot of experience racing there," senior Casey Harder said. "There will be some pretty fast teams so we'll get to see how we stack up against them and hopefully close some gaps that we've had in the past. It's our first time at Lake Natoma for the season, and the next time we're here we will be competing for another WCC title."
ABOUT THE REGATTA:
- The event is held at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, one of the finest facilities in the country, and in conjunction with Nimbus Flats State Park, is the established site of every major west coast championship for high school and collegiate rowing.
- Just like in years past, the Zags will race in three pre-set heats, two on Saturday and one on Sunday, with the second varsity four racing in a heat on Saturday morning and either the grand final or petite final in the afternoon.
- GU will open the day on Saturday against No. 3 Stanford and Sacramento State. The V4 is at 9:10 a.m., the 2V8 follows at 9:40 a.m. with the V8 at 10:00 a.m. The Bulldogs 2V4 will face (3) Stanford, Notre Dame and Sacramento State in the final race of the morning session at 10:40 a.m. The 2V4 Grand Finale will be at 5:20 p.m. while the Petite Final will be eat 5:10. In the afternoon, the Bulldogs will face No. 2 Cal and Miami. The V4 will compete at 3:40, followed by the 2V8 at 4:10 with the V8 at 4:40.
- On Sunday, the Zags face Notre Dame and No. 12 USC beginning with the V4 at 8:20 a.m. The 2V8 follow at 8:50 and the V8 close the regatta at 9:20 a.m.
EVENT HISTORY:
- This marks the fifth-straight season GU has competed in the Lake Natoma Invitational.
- On Saturday morning last year, the Bulldogs' varsity four opened the day with a third-place time 7:39.3, three seconds ahead of Sacramento State; the second varsity eight finished in the same spot at 6:52.3 while GU's second varsity four came in third (7:49.4), comfortably ahead of Sacramento State. In the afternoon, the Bulldogs recorded three wins over conference rival San Diego.
- On Sunday, the Zags faced Alabama, Sacramento State and San Diego in all thre races on the day. Both the varsity four and second varsity eight finished in second behind Alabama but ahead of both Sac State and San Diego. GU's varsity eight wrapped the day with a victory over Alabama, Sac State and USD.
- In 2017, all three Zags' boats defeated Clemson and fell to No. 6 Stanford on Saturday morning. In the afternoon GU swept Boston U in all three races and fell to No. 9 Brown. The Sunday morning session saw the varsity eight and varsity four boats take first, beating Notre Dame and (RV) Central Florida. The second varsity eight was edged by Notre Dame.
- In 2016, the Saturday morning session saw the No. 15 varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four all finish second behind No. 7 Stanford and ahead of Sacramento State. All three took second behind No. 2 Cal and ahead of LMU later in the day. On Sunday, the varsity eight defeated No. 16 Iowa and No. 18 Notre Dame. The second varsity eight beat Iowa and the varsity four beat Notre Dame.
- All three fell to No. 2 Brown and beat Sacramento State in 2015. They all took second behind No. 3 Cal and ahead of LMU later in the day. On Sunday, the top boat beat San Diego and Notre Dame, and the other two fell to Notre Dame but defeated USD. The third varsity eight won the "B" Final.
