SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga women's tennis dominated singles play on the way to a 4-0 sweep of Saint Mary's on Senior Day Saturday inside the Stevens Center.
Before the match, Gonzaga honored its four seniors:
Domonique Garley,
Sara Komer,
Graciela Rosas and
Sophie Whittle. The dual-match win was the 59
th in the last four years for the group of seniors.
"This was a great way to send out our seniors in their last home match, and a huge victory for our team," head coach
D.J. Gurule said. "We have a lot left to play for, and we just need to focus on each match and head into the WCC Tournament playing our best."
The momentum in the doubles point went back and forth, but GU (10-9, 5-3) was able to come up with the strong finish to take a 1-0 lead over Saint Mary's (9-9, 5-2). The No. 2 pair of
Haruna Tsuruta and
Kate Ketels took care of the first victory with a 6-4 win, but Saint Mary's top pair beat the No. 22-ranked duo of
Sophie Whittle and
Graciela Rosas on No. 1, 7-5. At that point, GU's
Sara Komer and
Domonique Garley were trailing in a tiebreak, 1-5, but scored the final five points in a row to win the game 8-6 and clinch the point.
Gonzaga went on to win the first set on five of the six singles courts on the way to a second straight sweep on the weekend.
Garley was the first to finish on No. 4, cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 win to make it 2-0 Gonzaga. GU's Whittle, ranked 11
th nationally in singles, grabbed the third point of the day with a 6-3, 6-3 win on No. 1.
Tsuruta claimed the clinching point on No. 5 with a straight set victory, 6-4, 6-2.
