Bulldogs face Cougars for third time this season
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team heads to Pullman, Wash., Sunday, April 28 for the annual Fawley Cup regatta against Washington State at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River. The first race is set to start at 9 a.m.
"This will be a great way to close out the spring racing season before our team defends its WCC championship," head women's rowing coach Marisa Wortman said.
ABOUT THE FAWLEY CUP:
- The Zags have won three Fawley Cups in the history of the event, with the last coming in 2016.
- The novice eight has the best record in the event since 2002 for GU at 6-8, going 3-5 in home races, last winning at home in 2014.
- The varsity four had an impressive 30-second win over Washington in 2017, at the time breaking an eight-race losing streak. In 2003 the varsity four claimed their lone win since 2002 at home.
- The second novice eight is 3-7 since 2002, but carry a two-race winning streak, taking wins on the road in 2016 and at home in 2014. Their two home wins since 2002 is second-best behind the novice eight.
- The third varsity eight broke a two-race losing streak in 2017 and have won two of the last five races. The cup has only featured the third varsity eight boat five times since 2007, and 2016 was the only home race for GU since 2002.
EVENT HISTORY:
- Last season, the (RV) Gonzaga Bulldogs were swept by No. 15 Washington State on Silver Lake. Depsite the sweep, the Bulldogs posted then-spring highs for the varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four boats.
- In 2016, the last Fawley Cup win for GU, both varsity eight boats encountered seaweed in the first 500 meters, which forced a restart with WSU ahead by seven lengths. The race restarted with that separation, but WSU caught a crab with 300 meters to go and the Zags finished 1.2 seconds ahead.
- GU won the varsity eight, third varsity eight, varsity four, novice eight, and novice four races in 2007, their best all-around performance in the cup. The Bulldogs varsity eight defeated the Cougars in a time of 6:31.94; their fastest finish in school history in that race.
AGAINST WSU
- This will be the third time during the 2017-18 season that the Bulldogs have raced the Cougars. The Zags first faced WSU in their season-opening regatta, the Head of the Spokane.
- At the Head of the Spokane, Gonzaga's pairs highlighted the season-opener. The Gonzaga "C" pairs boat took the win, crossing the line at 20:12, just ahead of the Zags "A" pairs boat (20:26). Washington State had a 20:37 finish.
- Gonzaga also picked up a win over the Cougars in its spring-opening regatta on the Snake River on March 24. The Bulldogs' second varsity eight bested Washington State by three seconds to claim second behind winner Oregon State.
