Washington State sweeps annual regatta
PULLMAN, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team fell short to (RV) Washington State in Sunday's Fawley Cup at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River outside of Pullman, Wash. The Cougars claimed the victory in all five races on Sunday.
"Today was a really good race and a solid way to end the regular season," head women's rowing coach Marisa Wortman said. "Today showed that we are fully capable of finding more speed, and that we can continue to build to have our best performance of the year at the WCC Conference Championships."
Both the varsity eight and second varsity eight challenged WSU in Sunday's regatta. The Bulldogs' varsity eight kept pace with the Cougars, falling just short in the final 500 meters as WSU edged GU by less than three seconds. GU finished the varsity eight race in a spring-best time of 6:38.26.
In the second varsity eight race, Gonzaga finished five seconds back from the Cougars. WSU finished in 6:49.24 while the Bulldogs crossed at 6:54.19.
"We really appreciate WSU hosting the regatta," Wortman said. "The Fawley Cup is a great tradition and a really good racing opportunity."
The Bulldogs return to the water May 18 for the West Coast Conference Championships on Lake Natoma outside Gold River, Calif.
