CLAREMONT, Calif. — Gonzaga women's tennis came up short against one of the nation's best teams in No. 6-ranked Pepperdine in the final of the West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon in Claremont, Calif.
Gonzaga (12-10) fought hard in the match and pushed the Waves (21-3) to the end with a singles win by
Sophie Whittle and another GU lead on No. 4 by
Vlada Medvedcova. Whittle and
Haruna Tsuruta each earned WCC All-Tournament Team honors in Singles at Nos. 1 and 5, while Whittle and
Graciela Rosas partnered to win All-Tournament honors in doubles at No. 1.
Gonzaga's team season has concluded, but seniors Whittle and
Graciela Rosas are in good position to advance to the NCAA Individual Singles and Doubles Championships in Orlando, Fla., in mid-May. Selections will be announced in the coming week.
"This senior class has eclipsed all our hopes and expectations during their time at Gonzaga," head coach
D.J. Gurule said. "Sara, Domo, Sophie and Grace are not only amazing tennis players, but they are incredible people that positively change the lives of everyone around them. They are irreplaceable, but the foundation and culture that they have left at Gonzaga will last a lifetime. We are so fortunate to call them Zags!"
Gonzaga put up a fight in the doubles point, getting the first win of the day on No. 1, but eventually falling short to the Waves. The No. 23-ranked duo of
Sophie Whittle and
Graciela Rosas dominated the nation's No. 34-ranked team from Pepperdine, 6-1. After the Waves took a 6-2 win on No. 3 and had a commanding 5-1 lead on No. 2, Gonzaga could only hold them off for so long. GU's No. 2 pair of
Haruna Tsuruta and
Kate Ketels held serve and earned a break-point to get it back to 5-3, but the Waves won the match 6-3 to take the point.
In singles, Pepperdine got the first win on No. 5, but the 10
th-ranked Whittle took down 36
th-ranked Ashley Lahey in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to pull GU within one at 2-1. From there, Gonzaga's Medvedcova won her first set 7-5, but the Waves claimed the final two wins needed for the team victory and the WCC title.
