Bulldogs chasing fifth-straight title
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team heads to Folsom, Calif., for the West Coast Conference Championships Saturday, May 18 on Lake Natoma. The Bulldogs are chasing their fifth-straight WCC title, 18th overall, and their sixth NCAA Championships berth.
"The team has been diligently training all year, and we are excited to defend our conference championship," head women's rowing coach Marisa Wortman said. "We look forward to great racing from all crews."
The second varsity four will kick off the racing at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the varsity four at 9 a.m., the second varsity eight at 9:20 a.m. and the varsity eight at 9:40 a.m.
ABOUT THE WCC CHAMPIONSHIPS:
- The Bulldogs have taken the WCC title for the past four years and 17 times in program history since it began in 1997.
- GU won the first nine championships, starting in 1997.
- The Zags finished the WCC Championships with 42 points last year, tying the conference record for the second-straight season. The varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four clinched victories to punch Gonzaga's fifth NCAA Championships appearance.
- Last year, the varsity four won with a time of 7:41.205, nine seconds ahead of Loyola Marymount. The second varsity eight came home at 6;57.080, eight seconds ahead of LMU, while the varsity eight completed the sweep at 6:39.26, five seconds ahead of LMU.
- Last season's WCC Championships sweep was the second-straight and the eighth time in program history that GU has swept all events.
- Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, and San Diego are the only three schools to win a WCC title. Gonzaga with 17, San Diego with four and Loyola Marymount with one.
EVENT HISTORY:
- The Gonzaga varsity eight has 16 wins at the event, taking runner-up finishes in every other year.
- The second varsity eight has 14 wins, including 11-straight from 2000 to 2010, and the varsity four has 10, including four in a row from 2005-08. All other finishes are runner-up except for a one varisity four performance.
- The seven teams competing include GU, San Diego, LMU, Portland, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and Creighton, a rowing-only member from Omaha, Neb.
AGAINST WCC PROGRAMS
- So far this season, the Zags have faced San Diego, Loyola Marymount and Portland out of the West Coast Conference.
- The Bulldogs first faced a WCC foe when they traveled to the 12th Portland Fall Classic on the Willamette River on Oct. 28. The Bulldogs picked up two wins over the Pilots as both of their Novice 8 boats defeated Portland. Most of the other races were cancelled due to weather.
- At GU's season-opening regatta on March 24, the Bulldogs swept LMU in the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 on the Snake River in Pullman, Wash.
- In early April at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Bulldogs faced off against WCC crews Loyola Marymount and San Diego. On the first day, the Zags collected Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 wins over San Diego, while the Bulldogs fell to Loyola Marymount in the Second Varsity 8 by four seconds. On the second day, GU bested both LMU and San Diego in the Varsity 8 race while falling to both LMU and USD in the Varsity 4 Petite Final.
