Bulldogs edge WCC foe San Diego in two races on the day

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team completed the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday, April 6 at Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif. The Bulldogs defeated WCC opponent San Diego in two separate races on the day.

The varsity eight boat opened the day with a 6:47.214 time in the Jessop-Whittier Cup Invitational to place fifth in the second heat. The Bulldogs finished 10 seconds ahead of San Diego State but over 20 seconds behind heat leader Washington (6:24.206). The Zags will face Tennessee, Stanford, Oklahoma and San Diego State Sunday in the Petite Final at 10:24 a.m.

In the second varsity eight Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy Heat 1, Gonzaga finished fourth with a time of 8:03.083, about two seconds ahead of WCC opponent San Diego. The Bulldogs were about 24 seconds behind California's winning time of 6:41.493; GU will face Loyola Marymount, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Sacramento State and SDSU in the Petite Final Sunday at 9:36 a.m.

GU's varsity four collected the highest finish of the day, placing third in the first heat of the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup with a time of 8:03.083. The Bulldogs edged San Diego by just over two seconds for the third-place finish. GU faces Tennessee, Washington State, San Diego State, San Diego and Loyola Marymount Sunday in the Petite Final at 8:24 a.m.
