SPOKANE, Wash. – Cierra Walker, a transfer from Vanderbilt, signed a financial aid agreement at Gonzaga University and will join the women's basketball team. She will be eligible for the 2020-21 season after sitting out the upcoming season due to NCAA transfer rules. Walker will have one year of eligibility remaining.
"We are really excited to have Cierra coming back to the Northwest," head women's basketball coach
Lisa Fortier said. "She is a proven player who brings a lot of experience to a fairly young team. She has the ability to get her shot off quickly from the midrange and from three, and she will continue to give us depth on the perimeter. She will also be a great secondary ball handler for our team. Cierra is a great fit for our program both on and off the court, and we are so happy to welcome her into the Zag Family."
In her first three seasons at Vanderbilt, Walker averaged 8.9 points per game shooting 39.1 percent from the floor and 39.2 percent from long range. She added 2.6 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per game.
During her junior campaign in 2018-19, Walker emerged as one of the top three-point shooting guards in the SEC, leading the Commodores and ranking sixth in the conference in three-point percentage at 39.1. She also ranked seventh in both three-pointers made (70) and three-pointers attempted (178). The Oregon City, Ore., native ranked second on the team in scoring at 10.8 points per game, netting a career-high 25 points against Auburn on Jan. 17, 2019. Walker finished 8-of-12 from long range; her eight made treys ties for Vanderbilt's single-game program record.
Out of high school, Walker was the No. 25-ranked prospect by ESPN HoopGurlz and No. 21 by Prospects Nation. At Oregon City High School, she was named to the First Team All-State Tournament team, was the Three Rivers League Player of the Year, the Oregon Class A scoring champion, Mt. Hood Conference Player of the Year, a McDonald's All-American nominee and a Gatorade Player of the Year nominee. Walker left Oregon City High School as the all-time leader in three-point field goals made with 249 and career assists with 416.
"I chose Gonzaga because I loved the team culture that this program has, and I felt like I fit into the family atmosphere," Walker said. "I love the way the team competes and how they play with passion and they have the will to win. They have the pieces to compete with all teams, and I'm excited to be a part of it!"
