MANHATTAN, Kan. – Madeline Gotta scored a golden goal in the 97
th minute to give the Gonzaga women's soccer team a 3-2 overtime win at Kansas State Thursday.
The first-ever meeting between the programs was a wild one. After a scoreless first 78 minutes, the teams combined for four goals in the final 11 minutes of regulation. Gotta capitalized on a pair of penalty kicks, including one seven minutes into the first overtime period for the Zag (5-2-0) win.
Just before halftime, GU's
Sophia Braun headed a cross towards the Kansas State net, forcing the Wildcats' goalkeeper into a diving save. The Zags were outshot in the first half, 8-6.
The Bulldogs'
Sophia Viviano almost broke through in the 47
th minute with a shot from just outside the 18. Her strike hit the crossbar and the rebound got out of the box.
In the 56
th minute,
Lauren Elwer had a 1-on-1 opportunity, but Emma Malsy made the save. Just minutes after that,
Erin Healy had a couple shots just miss the frame.
Gonzaga's
India Jencks opened the scoring in the 79
th minute. The senior's 16
th career goal, but first of the season, came off of a pass that slid through the Kansas State defense from Braun. Jencks took a dribble and then drove it low to the far side of the net. Jencks now has 40 points in her career.
Nearly six minutes later, Kansas State's (1-4-2) Christina Baxter brought in a pass from Laramie Hall and struck into the net for the equalizer.
Gotta's first goal came in the 87
th minute after a Zag was brought down in the box on a corner kick. It was her first goal of the season.
With just four seconds remaining in regulation, Hall and Baxter connected again for the Wildcats. This time it was Baxter that crossed in a ball into the box, that was headed into the net by Hall.
Seven minutes into overtime, Jencks made impressive move around a defender inside the 18, but was pulled down following the footwork. Gotta scored on the awarded penalty kick, recording her eighth career goal and 24
th career point.
After trailing 8-2 in shots early in the match, Gonzaga outshot Kansas State, 21-15. The Bulldogs placed 10 shots on frame, while KSU had five. Viviano took a game-high four shots. The Zags had an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams committed 12 fouls. Malsy finished with seven saves, and
Isabel Jones had three saves in the GU net.
The Bulldogs stay in the Midwest and travel to Nebraska (1-3-1) Sunday. It will be the first meeting between the programs. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. Pacific Time, and will be broadcast on Big Ten Network Plus, with live stats on GoZags.com.
