SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women's tennis was able to come out victorious on both ends of a doubleheader against Idaho and Eastern Washington on Saturday at the Stevens Center.
GU (3-4) started the day with a 4-1 win over Idaho (0-2), dropping only the doubles point, and then follow that up with a 4-0 sweep over EWU (2-2).
"We did a great job all day playing with energy up and down the entire line up," assistant coach
Natalie Pluskota-Hamberg said. "We made the necessary adjustments from last weekend to put together two good wins today. Next week will be a great opportunity to get better and compete."
Gonzaga 4, Idaho 1
In doubles, GU took the win on No. 3 with
Maria Frampton and
Vlada Medvedcova earning a 6-2 victory, but the Vandals won 6-4 on both Nos. 1 and 2 to take the point.
The Zags bounced back in singles, taking the first set on all six courts. Medvedcova led the way as the first to finish, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win on No. 4 to tie the match 1-1.
Kate Ketels gave the Zags the lead for good on No. 2, 6-1, 6-2, and
Taylor Gruber made it 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win on No. 5 to set up the clinching point.
Haruna Tsuruta finished off the match with her own dominant victory on No. 3, 6-2, 6-1.
Gonzaga 4, EWU 0
Gonzaga turned it around in doubles in its second match of the day, taking wins on Nos. 1 and 2 to get the point and get off to a 1-0 lead. Gruber and
Cate Broerman teamed up for a runaway 6-1 win on No. 2, while Ketels and Medvedcova clinched the point on No. 1, 6-4.
In singles, it was all Zags with five first-set wins on the six courts. Broerman was the first to finish, following up a 6-4 first set with a 6-0 second set to give GU a 2-0 lead.
Medvedcova finished next on No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-3 win to complete sweep on the day in both singles and doubles. She collected two singles wins and two doubles wins in the doubleheader.
Gruber capped off the day with a 6-4, 7-5 win on No. 5 to give GU the victory 4-0.
