Men’s Soccer Finalizes 2020 Recruiting Class

Zags will bring in nine newcomers for the upcoming season

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's soccer head coach Paul Meehan finalized his 2020 recruiting class with nine total newcomers on Friday.

Among the class is a quartet of transfers in Devin Slingsby from Bradley, Gideon Davis from Denver, Sebastian Karlholm from Butte College and Angelo Calfo. Five incoming freshmen round out the squad with , Logan Dorsey, Andres Labate, Milo Libby, Richard Ruiz and Wylie Trujillo.

"This group is certain to have an immediate impact, I expect we will be deeper at every position and I won't be surprised to see some major minutes played within this class," Meehan said. "There is versatility within the group, and they each have the character profile that is essential to being a Zag.  Recruiting for our program is always a group effort that goes well beyond our coaching staff – our ADs, compliance staff, student-athlete support staff, Faculty Athletic Representative, strength coach and many professors play a key and active role in the process.  I am very grateful for their support and insight, Coach Lewis in particular did a great job identifying several of these guys in the short time he has been here."

Angelo Calfo  |  Seattle Academy  |  Seattle, Wash.
Calfo, a Seattle native, graduated from Seattle Academy in 2018 after helping the soccer team to a 12-6-3 record in his final season. He then played for Richmond International American Soccer Academy in Leeds, England, where he helped lead his team to the finals of the JFC Youth Championship in Shenzhen, China. Academically, Calfo was a Dean's List honoree.
Meehan on Calfo:
"Angelo brings some needed size and experience centrally in the back and in the midfield.  His passing ability stands out, as does his mobility and ball winning."

Logan Dorsey  |  Colorado Rapids Academy  |  Evergreen, Colo.
Dorsey joins the Zags after playing for the Colorado Rapids Academy, where he scored seven goals in 15 games last season as the leading scorer for the U-18/19 squad. Prior to last year, he scored nine goals for the U-16/17 squad in 2018-19 and 11 goals in 2017-18. He also scored two goals in the final game of group play at the 2019 Generation adidas Cup to help the Rapids advance to the semifinals of the Premier Division. Dorsey also scored his first-career USL Championship goal in a match for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC last summer just four minutes into entering the game against the Tacoma Defiance. He made five appearances for the Switchbacks during the 2019 season.
Meehan on Dorsey:
"Logan is a hard-working and athletic front runner who has a knack for scoring goals and will keep his team in possession in the midfield.  He's quite agile for his size, I expect Logan to contribute right away. His experience in USL 1 will clearly be invaluable."

Gideon Davis  |  University of Denver |  Barcelona, Spain
Davis brings collegiate experience after a strong freshman season at Denver. He was ranked No. 62 on Top Drawer Soccer's Freshman Top-100 list after playing 19 matches at outside back with 11 starts. He was part of a Denver defense that finished 19th in the country in goals against average (.725) and 12th in shutout percentage (.524). He tallied assists in wins against Harvard and at Omaha. Academically, Davis was a Dean's List honoree at DU. Prior to Denver, Davis was called up to compete for the United States Youth National U-18 and U-20 teams while playing club for Real Colorado and Pride Soccer Club.
Meehan on Davis:
"Gideon's understanding of defending and his ability to communicate will be a much needed addition.  He's good on the ball, he has experience of having played both DI and with our Youth National Team, I expect he will be a leader in the back."

Sebastian Karlholm  |  Lundellska Skolan/Butte College  |  Uppsala, Sweden
Karlholm comes to GU after a two-year career at Butte College in Chico, Calif., where he earned All-Region honors and led the team to back-to-back Golden Valley Conference titles in 2018 and 2019. He made the all-state team both seasons and was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year twice. Academically, he was named to the Junior College Scholar All-American Team in 2019.
Meehan on Karlholm:
"Sebastian will arrive with two years of college experience as a defensive leader on a very good Butte College team.  He has an excellent change of pace, his distribution is outstanding, and he is able to play simply in possession."

Andres Labate  |  West Salem HS  |  Salem, Ore.
Labate, a native of Salem, Ore., finished his outstanding prep career with 32 goals and 48 assists in three seasons, along with being named the Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year and Athlete of the Year as a senior. He was a two-time first-team all-league honoree and helped his squad to a conference title. For his club team, Capital Timbers FC, Labate scored 14 goals and six assists last season, before moving to the Timbers Academy.
Meehan on Labate:
"Andres is athletic and can play effectively in multiple areas on the field.  He defends well, while thriving on the physical part of the game and keeping things simple in possession."

Milo Libby  |  Shattuck-St. Mary's  |  El Dorado Hills, Calif.
Libby attended Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault, Minn., and played alongside fellow 2020 recruit Wylie Trujillo. He played in every game during the 2018-19 season on the back line, helping his squad to four shutouts during the year and two more in the fall of 2019.
Meehan on Libby:
"Milo is a very good central defender who I believe will continue to develop. His best days are still ahead of him.  At 6-foot-4, Milo is an imposing, mobile defender and quite good on the ball."

Richard Ruiz  |  Real Salt Lake Academy  |  St. Louis, Mo.
Ruiz attended Kirkwood High School in his hometown of St. Louis for his first two seasons, scoring eight goals with nine assists for the Varsity as a sophomore. He earned First Team All-Conference and All-Region honors to go along with team MVP and all-state honorable mention. He moved on to Real Salt Lake Academy as a junior and served as the team captain as a senior, scoring a goal each season from his midfield position.
Meehan on Ruiz:
"Richard is an excellent defensive midfielder who takes pride in possessing and ending plays defensively.  He has outstanding passing range and will keep the opponent off balance with his ability to stretch the field.  He also is a leader in the midfield."

Devin Slingsby  |  Bradley University  |  Beaverton, Ore.
Slingsby comes to GU after a freshman season at Bradley University, where he appeared in 11 games with one start. He netted his lone goal at Western Illinois in a 2-1 win. At Jesuit High School in Portland, Ore., he earned all-state honors and was a nominee for the Oregon Gatorade State Player of the Year as a senior. Prior to returning to Jesuit as a senior, Slingsby trained with the Portland Timbers US Soccer Development Academy from 2016-18.
Meehan on Slingsby:
"Devin's DI experience is invaluable, I think he can help us in multiple areas on the field with his relentless work ethic.  He has the ability to score from longer range and can provide service with both feet.  His energy and enthusiasm is infectious."

Wylie Trujillo  |  Shattuck-St. Mary's  |  Albuquerque, N.M.
Trujillo attended Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault, Minn., for his final three seasons. As a freshman at St. Pius X in Albuquerque, N.M., he scored 14 goals and earned First Team All-District honors, while being named to the Dean's List. He scored 22 goals in his first two seasons with SSM and was the team captain in each of his final two seasons.
Meehan on Trujillo:
"Wylie can play any attacking position. He's savvy in and around the penalty area with the ability to score or make the final pass before a goal-scoring opportunity.  He covers a lot of ground and can impact the game defensively as well."
