SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Gonzaga's
Drew Timme was named one of the 10 candidates for the 2020 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Thursday.
Named after Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its seventh year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in November, which has now been narrowed to 10.
Timme is second in the West Coast Conference averaging 18.5 points, while shooting a league best 61.2 percent from the field. He's making 62.7 percent from his shots inside-the-arc, which is seventh in the conference. The sophomore's 6.93 rebounds per game ranks fifth in the WCC. He has started all 15 games for GU, scoring in double digits 14 times. Timme has six 20-point games this season, including a career-high 29 versus Virginia.
In late February, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2021 Karl Malone Award will be presented April 9, 2021, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five.
