Women’s Soccer Falls to BYU

Cougars snap Zags’ eight-game win streak

SPOKANE, Wash. — The BYU women's soccer team defeated No. 16 Gonzaga, 6-1, at Luger Field Saturday. It was the opening game of West Coast Conference play for both teams.
 
The Cougars' (6-3-1, 1-0-0 West Coast Conference) victory snapped GU's program-record eight game win streak.
 
BYU opened the scoring in the seventh minute with the first of two goals from Brecken Mozingo. In the 11th minute, Bella Folino deflected in a Bulldog clearance for her fourth goal of the season. Mozingo scored her fifth goal of the season in the 13th minute with an assist from Makaylie Moore. Cameron Tucker's fifth goal of the season came in the 14th minute.
 
Rachel McCarthy put BYU ahead 5-0 in the 32nd minute with a strike that slid past the GU keeper. Mikayla Colohan was credited with the assist. The Zags' (10-2-1, 0-1-0 WCC) Haley Archuleta capitalized on a penalty kick right before the half for her third goal of the season.
 
Colohan found the back of the net for the eighth time this season in the 56th minute. Tucker was given the assist.
 
BYU owned 51 percent of the possession in the game. The Cougars outshot Gonzaga 22-14, with a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal. It was the first time this season the Bulldogs were outshot by an opponent. Maddie Kemp led GU with three shots.
 
Lyza Bosselmann made several impressive saves in the Gonzaga net, finishing the match with eight. Cassidy Smith had three saves for BYU.
 
Gonzaga is at Portland Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Pilots (4-5-0, 0-1-0) fell at No. 6 Pepperdine in their WCC opener Saturday, 3-0.
