WBB Falls to UC Davis on the Road, 69-66

The Zags had three players score in double digits

DAVIS, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's basketball team couldn't overcome a late run from UC Davis and fell 69-66 on the road.

Three Zags scored in double figures as Yvonne Ejim scored 12, junior Kaylynne Truong had 11 and senior Melody Kempton led the team with 14. Junior Kayleigh Truong was nearly in double figures as she recorded nine and four assists in just 17 minutes of play.

Senior Abby O'Connor had a team-high seven rebounds and Kaylynne Truong led the team with five assists.

In the first quarter, the Zags shot at 51.7 percent as Kaylynne Truong led the team with eight. She went 3-for-3 in the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. Overall, the Bulldogs led 21-17 after ten minutes of play.

During the second quarter, junior Kayleigh Truong led the team with seven points and two assists. O'Connor and Kaylynne Truong both recorded three rebounds in the second frame.

At the half, Gonzaga led 40-25 and were dominating on the boards, outrebounding the Aggies 22-6. The Bulldogs recorded 16 points in the paint and 14 from the bench in the first twenty minutes of action. GU also forced seven turnovers and tallied five steals.

Coming out of halftime, GU scored 13 points in the third quarter with senior Melody Kempton leading the Bulldogs with four. The team forced four turnovers from UC Davis and scored five points off those miscues.

In the fourth quarter, the Zags were held to eight points and went 1-for-13 from the field. Kempton went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe as the Zags recorded six offensive rebounds.

Gonzaga had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds as Ejim stole the ball with four seconds left, but a three-point attempt from Kaylynne Truong fell just short.

The Aggies outscored the Zags 19-8 in the final quarter to give them the 69-66 lead at the end of regulation.

Overall, Gonzaga outrebounded UC Davis 34-23 and the Zags shot 40.4 percent. The Bulldogs had 25 points come off the bench and 30 from inside the paint. The Bulldogs also forced 14 turnovers and recorded 11 steals.

Records: Zags move to 8-3 on the season. UC Davis improves to 6-4 on the season.

With five rebounds today, Melody Kempton now has 400 career rebounds at Gonzaga.
