SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga Men's tennis team won 5-2 in their match against Idaho Wednesday evening inside the Steven's Center. This is the Zags fifth-straight win of the season for a perfect 5-0 mark on the year. Wednesday was the first match of the season for the Vandals.

GU took the early advantage as
Matthew Perkins and
Oliver Andersson defeated Idaho's Alex Asenov and Alejandro Salvador 6-3 at No. 3. The Vandals' Francisco Bascon and Matteo Masala evened doubles play with a 6-3 victory over Gonzaga's
Matthew Hollingworth and
Theo McDonald at No. 1 doubles, leaving it up to court two to decide the doubles point. Gonzaga was able to pull the win as
Sasha Trkulja and
Leon Roider won 6-4 against Idaho's Bruno Casino and Althaf Dhaifullah.

"I think it was a really solid match for the whole team," said Perkins.

With an early 1-0 lead to the match, the Zags were able to continue their lead through Andersson who finished first for GU in singles play. Andersson competed on court four against Idaho's Masala, defeating him 6-1, 6-2.

"I served well and did what I needed to do to get the win.," Andersson said. "I'm looking forward to having our first match on the road and playing against a solid Boise State team.

Matthew Hollingworth took his first loss on the season at No. 1 as Idaho's Bascon won 6-4, 6-2 to give Idaho its first point of the match. McDonald was next to finish for the Zags winning 6-2, 6-2 against Vivek Ramesh at No. 5 while Pablo Gomez, on court six, was able to secure the Zags' win by defeating Salvador 6-1 in his first set and winning in tie break 7-6 (7-3) to get the Zags their fourth point.

While the Bulldogs had already secured the victory, courts two and three played out their matches.
Sasha Trkulja overcame a tie break his first set winning 7-6 (10-8) and won his second set 6-1 against Dhaifullah. Idaho's Bruno took the final point for Idaho, defeating Roider 1-6, 6-7(4-7), 13-11 at No. 3.

"I think we came out with high energy and maintained a high level throughout the whole match," Perkins said. "It feels good to get another win with the guys."

The Bulldogs next match is Sunday, Feb. 21 at Boise State in Boise, Idaho. The match will be Gonzaga's first road contest of the year; it is set to begin at 11 a.m. PT. Check GoZags.com for up-to-date match time information. Â
