SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team defeated Grand Canyon 5-2 in a neutral-site match Saturday afternoon at the Mustang Tennis Complex in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Grand Canyon (1-11) took the early lead in doubles as Mariano Argote and Justin Cvitanovic bested
Oliver Andersson and
Matthew Perkins 6-3 at No. 2, but
Sasha Trkulja and
Pablo Gomez Galvan defeated GCU at No. 3 to tie doubles at 1-1. The Lopes took the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles to take the early 1-0 lead in the match.
"This was the first outdoor match for us this year," Head Coach
Jonas Piibor said. "I thought we had opportunities to grab the doubles point, but we let it slip away from us."
In singles play, Gonzaga took five-of-six singles matches to secure the 5-2 victory.
Leon Roider kicked things off with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, but Grand Canyon's Freddie Grant secured a 6-4, 6-1 win over
Matthew Perkins at No. 6 to give the 'Lopes a 2-1 match lead. A 6-4, 6-2 win by Trkulja at No. 2 singles tied the match 2-all, and Matthew Hollingsworth secured a 6-4, 6-4 win to give the Zags the match advantage; Andersson secured the victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Cvitanovic at No. 3 singles. No. 5 singles played out, with Gomez Galvan defeating Johnathan da Silva 6-4, 7-6 for the 5-2 match win.
"The guys did a great job of turning it up in their singles early, and they kept that momentum through the end to secure our team win," Piibor said. "We are looking forward to tomorrow's match vs. Cal Poly."
