SEATTLE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team was swept for the first time this season, dropping a 7-0 final score at Washington Sunday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash.
Gonzaga opened doubles play with a win as
Matthew Perkins and
Matthew Hollingworth made quick work of Washington's Han-Chih Lin and Ewen Lumsden, defeating the duo 6-2 at No. 3. The Huskies evened doubles play with a 6-4 victory over
Leon Roider and
Sasha Trkulja at No. 2, and Washington secured the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 1.
In singles play, Trkulja and Roider fell early at the No. 2 and No. 3 courts, respectively, while Hollingworth forced a tiebreaker at No. 1 before falling to Clement Chidekh 6-1, 7-(7-3). Washington's Adam Torocsik clinched the match point with a three-set victory over GU's
Hunter Egger at No. 6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The remaining matches played out, but all finished in favor of the Huskies to give Washington the 7-0 victory.
"Not the result we wanted, but we learned a lot from this match that will help us as we move forward in the season," Head Coach
Jonas Piibor said. "We are looking forward to some outdoor practice this week and more match opportunities next weekend."
Gonzaga continues play on the road next week as it travels to San Luis Obispo, Calif., for two matches: a neutral-site match against Grand Canyon at 11 a.m. on March 13, followed by a match at Cal Poly on March 14 at 10 a.m. Up-to-date match time information can be found on GoZags.com.
