SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team fell at Santa Clara 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center in Santa Clara, Calif.
Gonzaga (11-9, 0-5 WCC) struggled to secure the doubles point early as Santa Clara (6-6, 3-3) took the 6-3 victor at No. 1 doubles; Vasileios Iliopoulos and Arthur Neuhaus of the Broncos took down
Theo McDonald and
Oliver Andersson of the Zags 6-3. Domonic Barretto and Guillaume Dalmasso followed that up with a win over
Sasha Trkulja and
Leon Roider, 6-2 at No. 2. The third doubles match went unfinished.
In singles play, the Zags battled in a few close matches but could not quite edge a victory. On Court 2, Trkulja fought hard in the second set to try and extend the match but fell in a tiebreak to lose 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
Pablo Gomez Galvan brought the first set to a tiebreak on Court 5, but he fell 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. The remaining singles matches all went to three sets as the Zags tried to squeeze out some points.
Andersson fell to Neuhaus 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, Roider lost to Dalmasso 7-5, 4-6, 6-1,
Matthew Hollingworth was defeated 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, and
Matthew Perkins fell to Iliopoulos 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The final score was 7-0 in favor of the Broncos.
The Zags look to bounce back next weekend with a pair of matches home in Spokane at the Stevens Center. They will face Loyola Marymount Friday, April 16th at 2 p.m. and Pepperdine on Sunday, April 18th at 11 a.m. Check GoZags.com for up-to-date match time information.
