SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team had a strong showing in Saturday's dual against Oregon State at the Johnson Family Boathouse on Silver Lake. The Zags' fielded a varsity 8, JV8 and 3V8 in three races against the Beavers.
The Zags finished second in all three races on the 2000-meter course, but GU's JV8 showed great strength in its first official race on the Zags' home course. The morning yielded great racing conditions with limited wind and clear blue skies.
"I thought the JV had a good race except for getting tangled up with a buoy early on," Head Coach
Dan Gehn said. "That's a young boat, and it was good experience for them. I was disappointed with the varsity race; we weren't on point at all."
The Zags opened the day with the V8, finishing more than 18 seconds behind the Beavers' winning time of 6:04.29, while the JV8 were just eight seconds shy of OSU's winning time of 6:23.20, crossing the line in 6:31.20. The Bulldogs' 3V8 finished in 6:42.03, 12.83 seconds shy of the Beavers' time of 6:29.20.
Gonzaga returns to the water Saturday, April 24 at 8 a.m. against San Diego and UCSD in Chula Vista, Calif.
