MROW: Zags Set to Compete in Western Sprints

Regatta will be held at the Chula Vista Elite Athletic Training Center

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team is set to race the Western Sprints Saturday, May 15 at the Chula Vista Elite Athletic Training Center in Chula Vista.

"We're just glad to be able to race in our conference championship this year," Head Coach Dan Gehn said. "This is an awesome venue, and it should be a good race."

In past seasons, the even has been held at Lake Natoma near Sacramento in conjunction with the Pac-12 Championship, but the event has been moved to Southern California in 2021 to reduce travel for participating institutions.

The Zags will race two boats in Saturday's regatta, with boats in the Varsity 8 and JV8 races. The Varsity 8 will race at 8 a.m., while the JV8 follows at 8:30 a.m.

EVENT HISTORY
- The regatta is normally held at Lake Natoma in Folsom, Calif.
- The Western Sprints was formed as a stand-alone championship in 2014.
- Gonzaga won the first championship, defeating USD by more than two seconds to claim the varsity eight title. That same year, GU's second varsity eight finished second, three seconds behind the Toreros.
- In 2015, the Bulldogs took the second varsity eight, winning with a time of 6:27.0.
- Last season, the Zags fell short with its top finish in the 3V8 in second. GU's JV8 finished in third behind UCSD and Santa Clara, while the Zags' Varsity 8 was disqualified at the start.
