Zags start with Hobble Creek Fall Classic in Utah
SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women's golf team starts their 2021-22 season at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic Monday in Springville, Utah. The two-day tournament is hosted by Utah Valley University at the Hobble Creek Golf Course.
The Par-71 course will play 6,032 yards, with two rounds Monday and the final round Tuesday. The 54-hole tournament will get underway with a shotgun start on Monday at 6:45 a.m. Pacific Time, and finish with a final 18 on Tuesday beginning at 7 a.m.
After not being able to host the Hobble Creek Fall Classic last year due to COVID-19, this year's tournament will mark the eighth time that UVU has hosted the home tournament since the 2013-14 season. Gonzaga placed second in the inaugural event in 2013.
This year will feature a full field of 17 teams, as golfers from the host Wolverines, Boise State, Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, CSUN, Dixie State, Gonzaga, Idaho State, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Seattle U, Southern Utah, UT Rio Grande Valley, Weber State, and Wyoming are all expected to compete in the event.
Gonzaga comes into the season as the defending West Coast Conference champions. The Bulldogs took the team title at the annual event for the first time in program history last spring. Cassie Kim tied for second, while Quynn Duong was fourth. Both are back this season, along with Mary Scott Wolfe, who placed 10th.
The trio of Kim, Duong and Wolfe were all tabbed First Team All-WCC last season. Duong led the team with a 73.35 season average. She placed in the Top-10 in five of the six tournaments in the spring, with four Top-5 finishes. The junior carded the team's season-low round of 67 (-5) in the third round of the Red Rocks Invitational.
Wolfe and Kim both had a pair of Top-10 finishes last season. Wolfe's season average was 74.86, while Kim's was 75.06. Wolfe had a low round of 68, and Kim's low round was 69.
Alyssa Nguyen returns for her junior season after playing in eight rounds in the spring. Kaysa Panke appeared in five rounds and is back for her senior season.
