BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Gonzaga women's soccer cruised to a 5-0 shutout victory at CSU Bakersfield Sunday, the Zags' fifth straight win.
With the victory, GU (7-1-0) continued its best start to a season in program history. The Bulldogs are outscoring their opponents 29-3 this season, taking 187 shots to the opponents' 74.
Sunday, Gonzaga took 38 shots, placing 19 on goal. Five of
Kate Doyle's game-high 10 shots were on frame for the Zags.
Maddie Kemp had eight shots, with five on goal. GU had a dominating 18-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bulldogs' 38 shots were the most in program history since taking a West Coast Conference record 46 versus Whitman in 2000. Doyle matched the most shots taken by Zag in a game since 2007. With 12 games left in the regular season, GU is 10 goals shy of matching the program record for goals in a season, and four assists away from breaking the assists record.
Gonzaga's
Kate Doyle opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with her fourth goal of the season. She made her way through the CSU Bakersfield defense and slid a shot past the keeper at the near post.
Hannah Hale was credited with the assist, her second of the season.
Right before halftime,
Isabelle Moultray struck a shot well outside the 18-yard box into the net. It was her first collegiate goal.
Allison Pelstring's first collegiate goal in the 71st minute was a memorable one. The junior brought in a pass from
Sophia Braun from 30 yards out and struck to the upper corner at the far post. It was Braun's first assist of the season. Hale was also given an assist.
The conference's leading scorer,
Maddie Kemp, recorded her seventh goal of the season in the 83rd minute. The unassisted goal came off nifty dribbling the defense before squeezing in a shot between the CSUB keeper and the near post.
In the 88th minute, Moultray played a long ball over the Bakersfield defense to
Payton Stiles, who struck a shot into the back of the net. It was Stiles first goal of the season, and Moultray's second assist.
The Bulldogs dominated the possession at 66 percent, with 83 percent of that possession on the attacking side of the field.
Jamie Ingrassia led the Roadrunners (0-6-1) with three shots, two on goal. CSU Bakersfield finished the match with nine shots, with seven on frame. Haley Slouka made nine saves for CSUB, while Flavia Burrell had five.
Lyza Bosselmann finished with her sixth win of the season in the Gonzaga net. She made four saves in just over 72 minutes.
Lauren Towne had three for the Bulldogs.
The Zags return to the road at Arizona (3-3) and New Mexico State (4-3) Thursday and Friday. Both games will have live video and stats on GoZags.com.
