WBB Falls to No. 2 Stanford, 66-50

The Zags held Stanford to their lowest shooting percentage of the season

STANFORD, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's basketball team traveled to No. 2 Stanford University and fell 66-50 in the last-minute added game to the schedule.

Two Zags scored in double digits with sophomore Yvonne Ejim recording 14 points as junior Kayleigh Truong was right behind her with 12. Senior Cierra Walker grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, with six being offensive.

In the opening quarter, the Zags kept it close with the Cardinal as Kayleigh Truong made a last-second three-pointer to make the score 17-12 in favor of Stanford. Gonzaga shot at 32.9 percent as Kayleigh Truong led the team with five points.

The Bulldogs closed out the second quarter with a 7-0 run, led by sophomore Yvonne Ejim, who scored seven points in the second. With less a second left in the half, Ejim drew a foul and made the basket, finishing the quarter with a three-point play.

At the half, Stanford led 33-24 and was outrebounding GU by a slim 25-22. Ejim paced the team with eight points and recorded three rebounds in the first half. Senior Anamaria Virjoghe led the team in boards with six.

In the third quarter, Ejim had a team-high six points and recorded the only block of the game. Walker grabbed three boards, with two of those being offensive.

Senior Melody Kempton led the Zags in the final quarter with six points and four rebounds. The Bulldogs had their best rebounding performance in the final quarter with 13 and five of those being offensive.

Overall, the Zags shot at 33.9 percent and was outrebounded, 47-42. Defensively, GU held the Cardinal to a 33.8 shooting percentage, when the team averages 45.4 percent. The performance marked the lowest for the Cardinal so far this season.

GU had 14 points come from inside the paint and 21 from the bench. The team also scored 15 points off second chance points.

Records: GU falls to 10-4 on the season as Stanford moves to 11-3.

This marked the first time in program history that the two programs had a home-and-home series in one season.
