Gonzaga Shuts Out Saint Mary’s 2-0

Zags get goals from Riley and Elwer

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's soccer team recorded their eighth shutout of the season with a 2-0 home victory over Saint Mary's Saturday.

The Bulldogs (9-3-4, 4-1-2 West Coast Conference) picked up a needed win over a quality opponent with only two matches remaining in the regular season. GU outshot the Gaels 14-9, including 7-1 in the second half. SMC failed to put one shot on frame, while the Zags had eight.

Gonzaga's Giana Riley scored in the 40th minute. Maddie Kemp passed a ball through the Gaels' defense and Riley curled it around the keeper into the far post. Riley moved to a tie for second in program with her fifth goal as a freshman. It was Kemp's fifth assist of the season and 10th in her career.
In the 89th minute, Lauren Elwer scored her 12th career goal, and fourth of the season. Erin Healy was credited with the assist.
Elwer took a match-high four shots, with three on goal. Hannah Gray added three shots for the Bulldogs. Tessa Salvestrin led Saint Mary's (5-5-6, 1-3-3 WCC) with three shots. The Gaels' Taylor Poland made five saves.

The Bulldogs travel to No. 23 Santa Clara (10-6-2, 6-0-1) Wednesday. The Broncos are unbeaten in league play and atop the WCC standings. They played to a scoreless draw at No. 13 BYU Saturday. The Zags' match at SCU Wednesday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
