Gonzaga Wins WCC Men’s All-Sports Award

Zags honored at league’s annual awards banquet

SAN MATEO, Calif. – Gonzaga earned the 2021-22 West Coast Conference Men's All-Sports Award Wednesday. That award and several others were announced at the league's annual awards banquet.
 
Gonzaga won the Men's All-Sports Award for the second time in school history after sharing it with BYU in 2014. The Bulldogs celebrated many accomplishments across their men's sport programs in 2021-22.
 
The GU men's basketball team advanced to their seventh straight Sweet 16, the longest active streak in the country. The Zags finished their season with a 28-4 final record and was ranked No. 1 in the final regular season AP and coaches' polls. Gonzaga rides a national best 114 straight weeks in AP poll. The Bulldogs made their 23rd straight NCAA Tournament appearance and was a one-seed for the third straight NCAA tournament, and the fourth time in the last five tournaments. GU captured its 10th straight WCC Regular Season title and third straight WCC Tournament title.
 
The Gonzaga baseball team entered the Top 25 for the second straight year, climbing to No. 10, the highest-ranking under Head Coach Mark Machtolf. The Zags won all nine of its WCC series for the first time in program history, matching the record for most conference wins at 20. GU won the WCC Regular Season Championship for the sixth time in program history. The Bulldogs finished the season with 37 victories, the fifth-most all-time at GU, and the sixth-straight 30-win season under Machtolf. The Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Tournament for 12th time in program history as a two-seed.
 
The Zags' men's cross country team rose to a program-best No. 13 national ranking I the fall. GU made the program's second-ever appearance in the national championships as a team, after placing a program-best fifth at the NCAA West Regional Championships. Three Bulldogs finished in the Top-20 at Regionals, led by a fifth-place finish from James Mwaura. Led by a second-place finish by Mwaura and a program-record three runners in the top 10, Gonzaga took second place as a team at WCC Championships. Gonzaga had its lowest point total ever earned at a conference championship.
 
In Head Coach DJ Gurule's first season, men's tennis earned a program-record 18 dual wins, breaking the previous record of 16 from the 2018-19 season. Their overall 18-6 (.750) record is currently the best dual record in program history. Gonzaga set a new program record with nine dual sweeps this season, broke the program record for the longest winning streak, and had its best home record with a perfect finish at 11-0. The Zags finished 6-3 in conference play and advanced to the semifinal round of the WCC Championship. GU had the program's highest opening ITA Div. 1 ranking at No. 46.
 
Gonzaga men's soccer was one of the most improved teams in the country, winning seven games for the first time since 2016. The Bulldogs went on a four-game winning streak that included three shutouts. GU won its opening WCC game against San Diego, marking the first conference opening win for the Bulldogs since 2015.
