MISSOULA, Mont. – Pittsburgh found the back of the net in the 57
th minute and was able to hold off Gonzaga women's soccer for a 1-0 victory in the first game of the Rumble in the Rockies hosted by the University of Montana Thursday. It was the season-opener for both teams, and the first-ever meeting between the programs.
The Panthers (1-0-0, 0-0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) grabbed the game's lone goal off a strike from Amanda West in the box. The senior notched her 34
th career goal kicking in a loose ball in front of the net. Landy Mertz was credited with the assist.
Gonzaga (0-1-0, 0-0-0 WCC) outshot Pitt 17-16, with a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Erin Healy and
Sophia Braun both led the Zags with four shots each. Healy and
Kelsey Oyler both had three shots on frame. Braun struck the crossbar with a shot in the 44
th minute, and Healy did the same in the 88
th minute.
The Zags forced Pittsburgh's Caitlyn Lazzarini into 10 saves.
Lyza Bosselmann made three saves for GU. West and Sarah Schupansky both took four shots for the Panthers. West had three shots on goal. Pitt controlled 57 percent of the match's possession.
