Women’s Cross Country Wins Bronco Invite

Rosina Machu wins her second consecutive race to lead the Zags

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The 27th-ranked Gonzaga women's cross country team showed out at the Santa Clara Bronco Invite at Baylands Regional Park on Saturday, taking the team title by 78 points, and securing two spots on the podium. Rosina Machu (First, 19:16.3) and Sadie Tuckwood (Third, 19:57.1) paced the Zags in dominant fashion.

THE RACE
Just two weeks after shattering the program 6K record at the Lakefront Invitational, Machu bested her own record once again, this time by four seconds (19:16.3). The Boise native finished nearly 40 seconds ahead of the 203 remaining individuals in the field.

Tuckwood, amidst the chase pack, also made moves in the GU record book with a new personal best 6K time. Her 19:57.1 now sits third all-time in program history behind Machu's new record and Kristen Garcia's 19:44.1 from the NCAA West Regional meet in 2022.

True freshman Jessica Frydenlund continued to make noise in her collegiate debut season, placing 11th with a time of 20:13.7. Alicia Anderson also contributed to the scoring for the Bulldogs, placing 14th with a time of 20:32.7. Alexi Fogo rounded out the Gonzaga point-getters with a 17th place finish of 20:40.2.

Brittney Hansen just missed a Top 20 finish, taking 21st with a time of 20:48.0, not quite one second behind the 20th place mark. Lucy Klebeck (37th, 21:06.3) and Maria Taggi (42nd, 21:13.5) completed the list of GU finishers, all placing in the Top 50 of the 200+ individual field.

Gonzaga's 40 team points secured a comfortable first place, edging West Coast Conference foe San Francisco (2nd, 118 team points), as well as California (3rd, 122 team points). The Zags and Golden Bears were the only two teams with multiple runners in the Top Ten, but Machu and Tuckwood's Top Three finishes were by far the most dominant of the event.

UP NEXT
After the Gonzaga split-squads wrap up in Lewiston, Idaho on Saturday, the teams will remain local for the Sasquatch Open on Oct. 25. That event will mark the end of the regular season for the Zags, before heading to the West Coast Conference Championships on Oct. 28 in Malibu, Calif.
