STOCKTON, Calif. – Gonzaga women's soccer set new single season scoring, assist and point total records in a 5-2 victory at Pacific Wednesday. It was the 75
th win for Zags' Head Coach Chris Watkins.
The Bulldogs (11-3-1, 4-1-0 West Coast Conference) scored their 45th, 46th, 47th, 48th, and 49th goals of the season in the win, surpassing the 2021 total of 47 goals. The Zags recorded four assists in the win, which set a new season assist record at 48, one more than 47 in 2021. GU also reached 136 points for the season, breaking the 2021 previous record of 133. The Bulldogs entered the match with the No. 4 scoring offense in the country.
Watkins became the second coach in program history to reach 75 victories.
Maddie Kemp scored three times, becoming the first Zag to record a hat trick since Samantha Heilman versus San Diego on Oct. 5, 2019.
Following a Santa Clara loss to San Francisco, Gonzaga moved into sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference standings with three matches left.
The Zags'
Emelia Warta recorded her first collegiate goal to open the scoring in the 12
th minute.
Lauren Chin was credited with her first collegiate assist. Kemp scored her first goal of the night in the 32
nd minute off
Paige Alexander's first assist of the season.
Less than a minute into the second half, Pacific's (7-8-1, 1-4-0 WCC) Mira Scarsella found the back of the net to cut the lead to one. Kemp's second goal followed in the 51
st minute, prior to the Tigers' Taylor Curtis's score in the 54
th minute.
The barrage of scoring continued in the 60
th and 61
st minute as GU put the match away with goals from
Marissa Garcia and Kemp. Garcia's eighth goal of the season was off an assist from
Giana Riley, while Kemp's ninth goal of the year came from
Kelsey Oyler's 12
th assist.
Kemp jumped from fifth to fourth all-time at GU with 23 goals in her career, and to third with 61 career points. She also rose to second with 188 career shots.
Lauren Towne made four saves in the Gonzaga net, while Juliana Alexander had three for Pacific.
The Zags have off until Oct. 29, when they host No. 13 Santa Clara (10-3-2, 3-1-0) in Spokane. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
