Her fourth place finish sends her to Charlottesville, Va. next Saturday
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Rosina Machu continued her impressive 2023 season on Saturday at the NCAA West Regional Championships at Haggin Oak Golf Complex. The sophomore finished fourth in the women's championship 6K race to earn an individual qualifying bid to the NCAA National Championship meet next Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.
As a team, the Gonzaga women placed fifth, knocking off 17th-ranked Oregon State and 30th-ranked Portland. Their 173 team points are the second-lowest at the NCAA West Regionals in program history, only to the 2021 team who finished fourth with 148 points at the same course in Sacramento.
Machu's fourth place finish earned her a second-straight All-West honor, and her 19:15.7 finishing time broke the GU program 6K record for the third time this season. Machu broke the record twice already with wins at the Lakefront Invitational (19:20.3) and Bronco Invite (19:16.3). She is the second West Regional Top Five finisher for the Zags in the last three years, joining Kristen Garcia's third place finish in 2021.
Sadie Tuckwood also earned All-West with her 18th place finish. She crossed the finish line in 20:01.2, just four seconds shy of the PR she recorded earlier this season at the Bronco Invite. Jessica Frydenlund (36th, 20:28.6) cracked the Top 40 in her first career postseason race.
Returning to the NCAA Regional race, Alicia Anderson jumped 17 spots from last year with a 51st place, 20:38.0 finish on Friday. Brittney Hansen also bettered her 2022 finish with a 64th place, 20:44.0 finish, up 15 spots from last year. Alexi Fogo (88th, 20:58.9) and Anna Grabowski (95th, 21:07.0) secured spots six and seven for the Zags. Gonzaga has now placed all seven runners in the Top 100 twice in the last three years in a field of over 250 individual runners.
Oregon State's Kaylee Mitchell earned her second straight individual West Regional title, crossing the finish line in a course-record time of 19:08.4.
Stanford and Oregon earned the two automatic qualifying bids to the NCAA Championships next Saturday, with the Cardinal securing their fourth straight West Region team title.
