James Mwaura set for Third-Straight NCAA Outdoor Championships Appearance

Qualified in both 5K and 10K for second time in his career; Looking for third 10K All-American finish

Gonzaga's James Mwaura is set to make his return to collegiate Track & Field's biggest stage at NCAA Outdoor National Championships in Austin, Texas this week, qualifying in both the 5,000m and 10,000m for the second time in his career.

This is the third consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance for the senior, who looks to put the finishing touches on one of the most accomplished careers by a GU athlete in history. Mwaura — a program record holder in the 8K for cross country (23:02.9) as well as the 5K (13:30.02) and 10K (27:50.44) on the outdoor oval – is already a 2021 USATF U.S. Olympic Trials Finalist, an All-American in Cross Country (2021), and a two-time All-American in the 10K (2021, 2022).

At NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento last week, Mwura finished seventh in a 48-man 10K Semifinal race and fourth in his heat (10th overall) in the 5,000M two days later to punch his ticket twice – one of just four athletes at the meet to qualify in both events. With both results, Mwaura became the first Zag runner to reach the Final three times in a career, nonetheless three in a row.

Mwaura is seeded seventh (28:22.05) in Wednesday's 10K Final at 7:08 p.m. and 10th (13:38.82) in the 5K Final on Friday at 7:55 p.m. Both races will be broadcast live via ESPN+ on WatchESPN. Live results will be available through GoZags.com.

A HISTORIC CAREER
After becoming the first Zag to make three consecutive NCAA Finals when he qualified in the 10K at NCAA West Prelims on Wednesday, Mwaura will compete for a chance to close his GU career with even more rarefied air. On Friday, he became the first Zag to qualify for an NCAA Final in multiple events more than once, and one of only four athletes in this year's NCAA West Prelims to qualify in both -- the others being Stanford's Charlie Hicks and Ky Robinson and BYU's Casey Clinger. Mwaura qualified in the 10K last year and qualified in both events in 2021.

In Cross Country, Mwaura was the program's first NCAA Nationals individual qualifier in 2019 and first All-American with a 36th-place finish in Fall of 2021 — he was a part of three GU squads that reached Nationals, culminating in a program-best 13th-place finish in 2022.

THE ROAD TO AUSTIN
On Wednesday, Mwaura punched his ticket to a third-straight NCAA Outdoor Championship appearance with a seventh-place finish in the 10,000M Semifinals and a season-best 28:22.05 time.
The senior held around 10 runners deep for much of the early stages of the race, surging late to move up as high as third and challenging eventual event winner Isai Rodriguez (28:17.98) and second-place finisher Patrick Kiprop (28:19.23) over the back stretch to cement his chances of advancing. He ran his nine fastest 400m splits of the race over the final 3600m, running six consecutive sub-67 second laps (1:05.8, 1:04.3, 1:03.3, 1:05.7, 1:05.2, 1:06.7) to close.

In Friday's 5K Semifinals, Mwaura finished fourth in his heat (10th overall) with a 13:38.82 time to take one of ten automatic qualifying spots and punch his ticket to Austin yet again. Mwaura led the race through the ninth and tenth laps before eventual 1-2-3 finishers Nico Young (Northern Arizona), Casey Clinger (BYU) and Sam Gilman (Air Force) surged ahead and separated themselves from a crowded pack over the final 800m. Mwaura held on to cross the finish line in fourth with any challengers a healthy distance behind and one of five automatic spots in hand.
