#23 Gonzaga and #17 Texas Play to Scoreless Draw

Two of the nation’s top offenses stymied by defenses

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 23 Gonzaga women's soccer team played No. 17 Texas to a scoreless draw at Mike A. Myers Stadium Sunday.

On an extremely warm day in Austin, the nation's No. 1 scoring offense, Texas, met with the nation's No. 3 scoring offense in Gonzaga (6-1-1). The teams shared quality chances in the match but could not break through stellar defensive efforts and impressive goalkeeping.

The teams entered the contest with a combined 65 goals through the first seven games of the season. Texas' 35 goals led the nation, while GU's 30 goals were third. In the first-ever meeting between the programs in 2019, the Longhorns won a 4-3 shootout in Austin. Last season, GU led 2-0 before Texas rallied for a 3-2 victory in Spokane.

Against the country's top offense, Gonzaga's defense was at its best. Texas (6-1-1) led the nation in shots (27.4) and shots on goal (12.4) per game entering Sunday's contest. Against the Bulldogs, the Longhorns were held to 19 shots and eight on frame. GU ended with 20 shots, with nine on goal.

The Zags forced Texas' Mia Justus into a season-high 10 saves. Lauren Towne was essential to the shutout making six saves in the GU net. It was the fourth shutout of the season by the Gonzaga defense.

Marissa Garcia led the Bulldogs with five shots, three on goal, while the Longhorns' Lexi Missimo had a match-high seven shots (5 on goal).

Texas had 54 percent of the match's possession. Both teams took two corner kicks.

The Zags return home and host Arizona (3-1-3) Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus with live stats available on GoZags.com.
