SPOKANE, Wash. – Kelsey Oyler set a new single season assist program record and career assist program record in emphatic fashion during a 5-0 win for Gonzaga women's soccer over San Diego at Luger Field Saturday.
In the West Coast Conference season-opener for both teams, Oyler recorded three assists in the victory. She needed one assist coming into the game to set a new program record for most in season and three to set the new career mark. The junior entered the match with seven assists this season, which was tied for the most all-time at GU. It was the second time in the last three games Oyler was credited with three assists in a game. The Meridian, Idaho, native now has 19 career assists.
The Bulldogs (8-2-1, 1-0-0 West Coast Conference) bounced back from their second loss of the season in impressive fashion. Gonzaga's 39 goals already this season are tied for second-most in a single season, while its 32 assists are third.
Maddie Kemp scored twice and moved to fourth in program history with 52 career points and fifth with 19 career goals.
Freshman
Shelby Runje scored her fourth goal of the season in the 15
th minute.
Makayla Werner had her second assist of the year on the goal. The freshmen theme continued in the 38
th minute when
Emelia Warta assisted on
Katelyn Rigg's third goal of the season.
Oyler's record-breaking assist came on a long pass to
Marissa Garcia who kicked in a shot from distance in the 52
nd minute for her seventh goal of the season. It was Garcia's 16
th career goal, which is tied for 10
th all-time at GU.
Two minutes later, Oyler connected with
Maddie Kemp to put the Bulldogs ahead 4-0. The duo repeated in the 60
th minute, along with Garcia who was credited with an additional assist. Kemp finished with seven shots and four on frame.
The Zags dominated the flow of the match, outshooting USD 25-4, with a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal. GU had multiple shots hit the post and crossbar and possessed the ball for 60 percent of the match. Twenty-one Bulldogs entered the game.
Sophine Kevorkian made seven saves for the Toreros (1-9-1, 0-1-0 WCC), while
Lauren Towne had one for Gonzaga.
