Gonzaga opens up home competition on Jan. 19
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Gonzaga women's tennis team opened the 2024 spring season on the road with a 5-2 win over Georgetown.
GU swept the singles competition, winning all five matches that played out. In the No. 1 spot, Emily Robertson defeated Avantika Willy, 6-2, 6-0. Kianna Oda played in the third spot and had a three set battle. She came out on top 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, over Tatiana Zelenko.
In the No. 4 spot, Tiegan Aitken also went to three sets and won 7-6. 2-6, 6-3 over Morgan Coburn. Ella Nielsen competed at No. 5 and won in straight-sets over Ashley Kennedy, 6-1, 7-6. Rounding out singles competition was Caroline Wernli at No. 6 as she defeated Paige Gilbert, 6-2, 6-3. Rose Hayes also competed at the No. 3 spot and won the first set, 6-2 and was ahead 2-1 in the second until she had to retire the match,
The Zags started the day with doubles with Hayes and Aitken claiming a victory in the No. 2 position, 6-4. Oda and Robertson teamed up at No. 1 and dropped a close 6-4 match. Brooke Bittner and Lia Espinal battled together at No. 3 and fell 6-2.
