Gonzaga stays home next week to play Idaho on Sunday
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team opened their spring nonconference duel schedule earlier today, earning a dominant 6-1 victory over Eastern Washington. This marks the seventh consecutive opening-day victory for the Zags, dating back to the 2017-18 season.
Today's match began with a heated doubles competition, which saw Gonzaga's Leon Roider and Pablo Gomez Galvan deliver an early 6-1 court two victory over Eastern Washington's Tyler Waddock and Arshjot Bhatti. In the No.1 spot, Eastern Washington's Caden Kammerer and Tyler Dalos tied the doubles competition after picking up a 6-3 win against Gonzaga's Matthew Hollingworth and Sasha Trkulja. Gonzaga clinched the doubles point when Gus Krauel and Tom Dunlap defeated Eastern Washington's Erik Sarlvik and Drew Dillon by a score of 6-3 on court three.
Gonzaga continued to impress in the singles competition, as Roider quickly claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Kammerer. Shortly after, Hollingworth cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 court two win over Dillon. Gonzaga clinched the team victory when Trkulja defeated Waddock in the No.1 spot, winning by a score of 6-4, 6-1.
In the No.4 spot, Gomez Galvan picked up a 6-0, 7-5 win against Dalos. In his first collegiate match, Gonzaga freshman Oscar Rashed swiftly defeated Sarlvik, winning by a score of 6-2, 6-2 on court six. The final match of the day saw Dunlop battle, but lose 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 against Bhatti on court five.
Up next: Following today's victory, the Gonzaga men's tennis team will face the University of Idaho on Sunday, January 28th at 2 pm in the Stevens Center.
