ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands – The Gonzaga women's basketball team opened the Paradise Jam with a close loss to Missouri State, 65-64.
Three Bulldogs scored in double figures paced by
Yvonne Ejim's 21 points.
Allie Turner was the next scorer with 13, followed by Inês Bettencourt with 12.
Maud Huijbens grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds as well.
At the half, GU trailed 29-27, after Missouri State made a last second layup to take the lead. Turner led the Zags with eight points. Gonzaga shot 45.5% from the floor and held Missouri State to 33%.
The rebounds were also close at the half as the Lady Bears grabbed one more than Gonzaga, 18-17. Huijbens grabbed a team-high eight boards.
Coming out of the half,
Christabel Osarobo drained a three-pointer to bring the Zags within one point before the Lady Bears went on a run to make it 41-32 with under five minutes left in the third. MSU went on to outscore GU in the third, 23-13, paced by Paige Rocca's 10 points.
Going into the final quarter, Gonzaga trailed 52-40, but outscored the Lady Bears, 24-13, to make it a one-point game at the end. Ejim fueled GU with 11 points and five rebounds in the final 10 minutes.
The Zags went on an 11-0 run and tied the game with 13 seconds left with an incredibly clutch three-pointer from
Allie Turner. Missouri State was able to draw a foul with four seconds left and made one of those to come out with the win. Ines Bettencourt attempted a last-second shot, but it came up just short.
Overall, GU shot 48.1% from the floor and held MSU to 39%. Missouri State had the slight edge in rebounds, 34-33, and Gonzaga forced 10 turnovers from the Lady Bears.
